About South Sea Cultured Pearls

South Sea cultured pearls are the rarest and largest cultured pearls in the world. Their soft and luminous inner glow in addition to their impressive size make them the most coveted of all cultured pearls available on the fine jewelry market today.

South Sea pearl values are dependant a few visible factors. The first is the pearl’s luster. Luster is best described as a mirror - how clearly does the pearl reflect images and how brilliantly does it reflect light. Only a rare handful in the world will have a brilliant reflection and shine.

Next and most prominent is the roundness of the pearl. Oysters are hand turned during pearl growth to ensure a rounder pearl. The great majority of the South Sea cultured pearls today are significantly less round. As a result, a very round pearl is very rare and very valued.

A pearl’s clean surface the pearl is essential for shine and radiance. Surface blemishes can effect how well a pearl shines. Since pearls are natural gems, their surface can often be marked with surface blemishes. A few rare pearls will have a surface or body that is relatively free of surface blemishes.

Different regions produce different sizes and colors. Experts estimate it can take sifting through over 10,000 individual pearls to find two matched for stud earrings. This rarity makes a well matched strand more valuable than the combined value of the individual pearls.

Very few strands with high ratings in each of the above value factors are available in the fine jewelry market on an annual basis. It is estimated that less than ten strands of this caliber are made available annually.

Lastly, there are two main colors of South Sea Pearls – white and golden. Golden South Sea do command a higher value. When looking to invest in Golden South Sea pearls, look for deep color saturation. Lighter shades of gold or golden pearls with differing overtones can be worth less value.
